Local Folk Say Thanks to the Army

Within the past couple of weeks soldiers of the South African Defence Force have experienced for themselves a taste of Smithfield’s traditional hospitality. Members of the Defence Force team who have been based in the town to assist in helping out during the water crisis, have been working hard during a period of intense heat to alleviate the problems experienced by a town whose municipality has not been able to maintain supplies of fresh water during the period of drought. In common with towns and cities throughout the country, Smithfield has suffered a serious breakdown in water supplies in the past week, affecting all members of the community. The following municipal statement has been issued: The Municipality has encountered a water shortage problem in Smithfield from 29 October as a result of the drought faced throughout the country which severely affected our source of water when the Smithfield dam went dry due to the lack of rain.
