What a privilege to have an entertainer of his stature at Buckley’s in our own hometown, we had guests from Aliwal North and Zastron joining us for the evening and they begged to be informed of other events we are planning in future.
The concert coincided with the Super Moon and that in itself added an atmosphere of love, harmony and made you feel small in this universe.
The music Mathys did of Leonard Cohen was as if was written for the evening in Smithfield and the setting. Mathys entertained the guest with a variety of covers and of course his own songs. When he thanked everybody for their enthusiasm and hospitality, everybody looked at their watches and could not believe that he could be finished, only to realise that 90 minutes passed in a blink of the eye.
The norm of an open air concert is that you will get people talking and you will hear spurts of laughter during the performance, but with Mathys is was different, you had an audience hanging onto the words of the ballads and songs he did, people rubbing their arms because of the goose bumps they had.
One of the guests commented to say it felt as if Mathys came just to sing for her – possibly the biggest compliment any entertainer can get.
The only way to summarise the event is to say – “The evening was MAGIC!”
